it was a glorious one, to say the least. the lineup was just too good:
1. noelle and i went to the deep ellum big folkin’ festival on friday. one of my favorite bands, seryn, was playing at the festival, and there ended up being quite a few other awesome bands too. we especially liked dovetail, a longhaired americana rock group with a folk-y vibe, and great escape, made up of steve and harris, a guitarist and a violinist who make some sweet sounds but are also veryyyy easy on the eyes.
{seryn}
{i didn’t get a picture of dovetail, but the left picture is of a cool band called the scrips. and the handsome great escape is on the right… this picture isn’t awesome, but that violinist on the left was like HELLO.} ;)
the venue was the prophet bar, which is dark and seedy and a bit of a dive [in a rad sort of way] and between that and the people who were there, i was convinced that we weren’t in dallas anymore. no, we were in austin. or portland or something. but the people-watching was some of the best i’ve ever experienced – i’ve never seen so many grungy guys in one place with women’s shirts and skinnies and long “jesus hair” parted down the middle. and the girls’ outfits ranged from fishnets to bell bottoms to robes [i can’t really talk, since i was sporting a kimono myself…] :) it was a very interesting mix of hipsters and hippies. and noelle and me among them! we really did have a great time though, and music was wonderful.
also, there were some food trucks there, a trailer that was selling art and apparel, and this awesome little airstream photo booth, which noelle and i definitely hit up:
{isn’t that photo booth trailer the cutest?}
2. sleepover at my house! i finally got my new pullout couch, so noelle even had her own bed!
3. chai tea lattes and a blueberry muffin that we shared for breakfast from bread winners on saturday morning as we hopped on the trolley to go to klyde warren park [because i pretty much live at this park now].
4. sat at a table at the park and watched a huge group of people do yoga, doted on the dogs, marveled at the kids and their endless energy [and wondered how parents do it!], and read the dallas morning news that some people at the park were passing out for free. it may have been my first time to read the newspaper in like two years, actually. sad but true.
{there was this little dog right in the middle of all the people doing yoga just sitting there, looking around at them like, “humans sure do weird things for fun.” i was dying.}
5. met up with my friend adrienne, her boyfriend grant, and her puppy leila and took pictures with the easter bunny [or e-bunz, as we affectionately call him!] at the park.
{leila seems to be thoroughly enjoying herself on the easter bunny’s lap! she’s such a happy pup!}
6. brunch at bread winners. because one meal per day at bread winners just isn’t enough! this time, though, we had adrienne, grant, and leila with us, and it was much more leisurely. we sat on the patio, enjoying the beautiful weather – and the company too, because adrienne and grant are a trip! they’re two cool cats.
*because i’m all about keeping things real, i will interject with a not-so-awesome thing that happened right after brunch: noelle’s car got towed. yeah, it’s not always rainbows and butterflies, my friends. but luckily we were able to get it back right away, and she didn’t let it ruin her saturday!
7. we met up with some of noelle’s friends at a crawfish boil at barley house – i went to the same one last year. we spent the rest of the afternoon out there on the patio and it was a grand time.
8. i left around 6:45, went home, and wasn’t ready to be inside for the evening yet, so i took a long walk around uptown with my camera as the sun went down. photos to come!
9. after being outside from 10 am to 8 pm on saturday, i went to bed early and slept really, really good.
10. sunday – church with my friends from the porch. it had been too long since i’d seen them!
11. my parents + mimi came over, and dad helped me hang my new mason jar lights on my porch. i kiiiiiiinda love them.
{a picture i took later that night}
12. that afternoon, i went to bits & bites with the fam, an event put on my my culinary school school to raise money for our food and hospitality program and simultaneously honor someone who has been influential to the program’s growth. this one was a special one, because it was honoring the founder of the whole program, who also happens to be my wine professor. they bring in TONS of restaurants and other vendors that sell food and beverages in the area and they set up booths and serve a bite-sized sampling of what they offer. so basically, you pay for a ticket, and then you go around and stuff yourself with amazing food and taste wine and beer until you can’t eat another bite or drink another sip. right up my alley, obviously. and my family’s too! it was such a fun way to spend the afternoon, and it was nice that my family got to see my school and meet some of my professors and fellow students.
13. i watched eat, pray, love that night because i had never seen it before. of course the book was a lot better, but the movie did re-arouse my wanderlust, that’s for sure! what a coincidence – i’m totally ready to travel across the globe for a food-spiritual-love journey too! ha! i was born ready for that. maybe someday…
i had to miss brunch with the church crowd on sunday, which was a bummer, and i wish noelle’s car wouldn’t have been towed, but other than that, it was a near perfect weekend. and the weather confirmed that spring is finally here! woo-hoo!
