i know i’ve been slacking this week in the blogging department butttt i’ve been busy going up in the eiffel tower, visiting notre dame, touring versailles, living it up in paris, etc. #sorryboutit. but i’m not gonna leave ya hanging when it comes to selfie sunday, so here we go!
last week’s challenge was to learn three useful french phrases and three useful dutch phrases, but I was actually only able to learn a few [easy] french phrases this week. in fact, i haven’t even opened up my dutch phrase book… just trying to soak in as much of the french language as possible [which unfortunately isn’t much] because goodness, it’s beautiful. i could listen to it all day. it would be in my best interest to avoid all parisian men because their language/accents combined with their sense of style and the sheer romance of this city is DANGEROUS in the most alluring way.
the french phrases that i have managed to master are:
“l’addition, s’il vous plait” [the bill, please]
“merci beaucoup” [thank you very much]
“pardon” [sorry]
…impressive, right? ha. but please keep in mind that i’ve never learned french in school [not even a little bit] and all these phrases are pronounced very differently than the way you would sound them out in english [as are most french words] and the phrases now roll off my tongue and no one stares at me blankly or asks what i just said or giggles at my accent [at least to my face] and i’m quite convinced that i sound french when i say them, so this, in my book, is an accomplishment!
and a few phrases that i would still like to learn but haven’t mastered yet:
“comment faire pour y aller?” [how do i get there?]
“pouvez-vous m’indiquer sur la carte?” [can you show me on the map?]
“pouvez-vous me prendre en photo?” [could you take a photograph of me?]
“tu es tres beau.” [you’re very attractive.]
kidding on that last one. even though that phrase is actually one that’s already engrained in my head for some reason. we’ll see what dutch shenanigans i can teach myself next week…
and a little disclaimer about my selfie of the week: i did a poor job of planning today… this photo was just after twelve straight hours of being out and about, over nine miles of walking, several rainstorms, and the third day since I washed my hair, so…
my mom tried to get me to cheat and post my selfie in front of the eiffel tower earlier in the week, but i told her that was against the rules. so instead of a glorious selfie in front of the palace of versailles [which i totally could have pulled off today, had i been thinking], you get me at our little apartment. but it’s still somewhat parisian-looking, i suppose.
hope all is well in the states! xoxo
