katlyn and i spent july 4th discovering downtown dallas.
we started off with an amazing lunch at iron cactus.
{i had the yucatan fish tacos – tequila-marinated tilapia in grilled corn tortillas with fresh spinach and mango salsa, served with a lime butter sauce, mexican rice, and black bean corn relish.}
we did quite a bit of walking downtown, mostly because we couldn’t park close to most of places we went to, and it was HOT. but also totally worth it, as we discovered some hidden gems, like this little chapel that we stumbled upon after lunch.

then we walked to the chapel of thanksgiving, which i didn’t know much about but had seen pictures of online. it turned out to be the most lovely little place, a sanctuary tucked between some skyscrapers, where people of all faiths could come and give thanks.
the best part was the glory window, the colorful spiraling stained-glass window on the inside. it was breathtaking – i’d never seen anything like it.
i don’t know how i’d never been to the chapel of thanksgiving before, having grown up near dallas my whole life. it was such an inspiring and spiritually refreshing place.
our next stop was the sixth floor museum at dealey plaza, where jfk was shot in 1963. i’d been several times before when i was younger, but katlyn wanted to see it. it’s a great museum, and i’m so happy we went – you appreciate different things at different ages, and it had been a while for me. it was a very memorable event for many, many people.
finally, we detoured over the margaret hunt hill bridge so that katlyn, the structural engineer, could see it up close. it’s such a beautiful bridge – i need to have a little photo session with my nikon there sometime soon.

after our big day, we headed home to rest before going to the fireworks at fair park. my friend monica came with us, and it was nice to catch up with some fun, festive, and cheap entertainment.
i had thursday off of work as well, so to complete my holiday, i slept in, worked out, and went to the pool in the morning.
next, i went to central market for sushi, a tea, and a look at all the handsome men who go there on their lunch break. ;)
and then i spent the afternoon making invitations for an upcoming party that my parents are hosting and looking at apartments. it’s hard to believe that our lease ends in a month!
it was a wonderful little holiday.
