following the awesome tour of ed’s avocado grove, which included an exciting bear sighting and a yummy BBQ lunch, we hit the road. with ken, a member of the california avocado commission staff, as our driver and guide, we headed up the coast towards san luis obispo for the next part of our journey. BUT. not without making a pit stop first.
you see, there’s this quaint little historic town of about 1,000 residents in the santa ynez valley that is renowned for its wineries and tasting rooms. it’s called los olivos, and boy, is it cute. ken knows the area [he knows pretty much all of california, from the large cities to the small towns], so he suggested that we stop to check out a few wineries. and we didn’t turn him down! [we weren’t driving, and he wasn’t drinking, so…]
a whole bunch of the los olivos wineries are in one area, so you can walk from one to the other, and all the buildings are sweet little victorian-looking cottages. we tasted wines at three different wineries and had a grand time. and then we all had wine shipped back home. not a bad stop to make, that’s for sure! we were starting this trip off with a bang! i mean really, avocado groves with a spectacular view and bear sightings and wine tasting, along with some great people? we had hit the jackpot several times already that day, and the crazy part was, the day wasn’t even over! little did we know what was in store for us at dinner… but more on that later.
{wine country}
{daniel gehrs winery & tasting room}
{epiphany cellars – they had some great wines, and this is where all of our purchases came from}
{carhartt vineyard – we sat outside at this tasting room and the patio atmosphere was fantastic. reminded me of a beer garden!}
the next part of my california avocado adventure will be posted soon!
