back to my california produce adventure last july… where were we?
ah, yes. after our trip to the avocado groves in ventura county and a side trip to some wineries in los olivos, we were on the road again. we were going right past the town of la conchita, where the terrible landslide of 2005 killed ten people and destroyed 18 homes, so ken actually drove through the town to the edge of the hill where mounds of dirt still lay, covering buried homes. it was fenced off and there were signs declaring it a geological hazard area, and it all felt so eerie – the whole town did, in fact. it was educational to me, because i never knew about the la conchita landslide, nor did i know much about landslides in general. i can’t imagine what it’s like to see the earth crumbling, falling, flowing toward you, burying homes within 15 seconds. it’s completely unreal.
on a much lighter note, we arrived at pismo beach just in time for dinner and a fantastic sunset over the ocean. what a way to end the day, no? we were also lucky to get to stay at the cliffs resort on the water, which meant a lovely walk for me the next morning along an oceanside path. i was a happy camper.
{dinner at ventana grill… just above that azure water and the crashing waves.}
{standing at the rail of the restaurant}
{okay, this is cool.}
{instead of bread, they served hot homemade tortillas with three different kinds of salsa and cinnamon butter. i put a dot of each on my plate to show off the goodness.}
{sopes: pork carnitas, cornmeal tartlets, pinquito beans, habanero pickled onions, pico de gallo, guacamole, queso fresco}
{might be the most beautiful sunset i’ve ever seen.}
{morning walk}
{the pacific}
{path from the cliffs resort}
the next part of our journey up the coast will be coming soon!
