since jamie and i actually got home from our honeymoon on halloween this year, we thought it would be really funny to do “old married couple” costumes that night. after all, being back from our honeymoon totally makes us an old married couple, right?! ;) and you guys know me – i always have to post some kind of costume tutorial, so halloween costumes are a must. old married couple costumes ended up being perfect since we were jet-lagged and had no real plans on the night of october 31, and these costumes were the easiest thing possible to put together, inexpensive, and BONUS: they were super comfy! we got to enjoy the night like the true grandma and grandpa that we are! ;) we were able to get all the costume components before our wedding, so that all we had to do when we got home was throw on the costumes and take some pictures.
i use the term “tutorial” loosely in this post, because i didn’t really have a chance to take photos of the individual elements of the costume nor the makeup process, but it’s pretty straightforward. here’s what you need to complete the costumes:
: : gray or silver spray-on wash-out hair spray
: : PJs [preferably a matching top and bottom for a men’s costume and a nightie for a women’s costume… the frumpier the better! jamie got his from goodwill and i got mine from walmart.]
: : crew socks
: : slippers [again, the frumpier the better]
: : bathrobes
: : curlers [i used the foam kind from walmart]
: : fake wire-rimmed glasses or reading glasses
: : coffee mugs
: : brown eyeliner
: : skin-colored powder
: : powder that’s a shade or two darker than skin color
: : blending brush
we first sprayed each other’s hair with the gray hair spray, and then i put my hair up in the foam curlers once i had my nightie on.
for the makeup, i just used brown eyeliner to trace over and exaggerate the fine lines that i already [unfortunately] have on my face and jamie’s has on his [forehead, outer corner of eyes, and around our smiles], and added some just above our upper lips as well. i blended these with the skin-colored powder to make the lines look more natural, and then i used the darker powder to make dark circles under our eyes.
and then we just had to get everything else on and we were done! seriously, easiest/comfiest costumes ever. i’m worried that jamie is going to want to be the same thing for halloween next year, haha.
we’ll see what next halloween brings. :) xoxo
